Jason Hickman

PhD student, Applied Plant Sciences Graduate Program

Jason (he/him) is a Ph.D. student in the Applied Plant Sciences program at the University of Minnesota. His work focuses on nitrate leaching in continuous living cover agroecosystems and yield decline in intermediate wheatgrass (Kernza). This includes work on perennial crops (intermediate wheatgrass, alfalfa, native prairie) and utilizing winter barley as a cover crop in a barley - soybean double cropping project. Additionally, Jason is interested in the physiological drivers of grain yield decline in intermediate wheatgrass, giving rise to two projects looking at the impacts of light quality and intensity on grain yields of aging plants. In his M.S. Jason studied the impacts of drought and pathogen stress on peanut yields. Outside of school, Jason enjoys taking macro pictures of nature and spending time with his cats.
